A Soothing Story for Toddlers Who Get Upset by Change

Anna sat at the kitchen table in her soft yellow pajamas.
Her old blue cup was in the sink.
Tonight, Mama gave her a new cup instead.

It was red.
Bright red.
With tiny white flowers around the top.

Anna touched it with one finger.

“It’s for big kids now,” Mama said softly.

Anna looked at the cup.
Then she looked at the milk inside it.

Usually, she held her blue cup with both hands.
Usually, the little dent near the handle pressed against her thumb just right.

But this cup felt smooth.
Too smooth.

Anna lifted it slowly.

A little milk slipped over the side.

Oh,” Mama said.

Milk dripped onto Anna’s pajamas.
Then onto the table.
Then onto the floor.

Anna’s chest suddenly felt tight.

Her fingers squeezed hard around the cup.

Her cheeks got hot.
Very hot.

Mama reached for a towel, but Anna pulled the cup close first.

I can do it!” she shouted.

The milk wiggled again.

More spilled.

Anna pushed the cup away fast.

It tipped over with a clunk.

Now the milk was everywhere.

Anna’s eyes filled with tears so quickly that everything looked shiny and blurry.

I don’t want it!” she yelled.

Her small feet kicked the chair.

Then she slid down under the table.

Everything became quiet there.

Only the soft hum of the fridge stayed in the room.

Mama did not talk right away.

Anna pressed her forehead against her knees.

Her breathing felt bumpy.

The floor felt cool under her toes.

After a long moment, Mama sat down nearby.
Not too close.

Just close enough.

Anna’s voice came out tiny.

I wasn’t ready for the red cup.

Mama nodded once.

The kitchen stayed still for a little while.

Then Mama held out her hand.

Can we squeeze our hands together?” she asked quietly.

Anna looked at Mama’s hand.

She crawled out slowly and placed her small hand inside.

Mama gave one gentle squeeze.

Anna squeezed back.

Once.

Then again.

The tight feeling in Anna’s chest did not leave all at once.

But it loosened a little.

Her shoulders dropped down.

Her breathing slowed.

Mama handed her the towel, and together they wiped the table in soft little circles.

When the floor was dry again, the red cup stood near the sink.

Anna looked at it carefully.

It still felt new.

Still a little strange.

But not quite as loud inside her chest now.

Mama poured a little more milk.
Only a little.

This time, Anna held the cup with both hands.

The milk wobbled, but stayed inside.

Mama smiled with sleepy eyes.

Later, tucked into bed beneath her warm blanket, Anna held her stuffed bunny close.

The house was dark and quiet.

From the hallway, Mama whispered, “Goodnight, my girl.

Anna touched the bunny’s soft ear.

The red cup would still be there tomorrow.

And tonight, her bed felt warm.
Safe.
Still.
